To begin....and the dark cloud of RTÉ

Apparently, I’m meant to explain why I’m writing a blog.  I’m meant to offer my unique, interesting, possibly witty take on the world around me.  I’m meant to inspire, amuse and entertain.

In the spirit of this blog however, I’m not going to bother with any of that.  Maybe its cathartic, writing things down.  Maybe it stops me irritating my wife with my ridiculous brain-farts.  Maybe it amuses me to see my thoughts on the page, and as long as I’m amused, I’m happy.

Anyway, there’s a programme trailer on RTÉ at the moment, something very serious no doubt, during which a man declares that “the dark cloud of Alzheimer’s has been in my family as long as I can remember”.  And right away RTÉ had lost me.  Its very hard to be sympathetic when you’re doubled over laughing.  Obviously he didn’t mean to say it like that, and he’s clearly worried about Alzheimer’s, which is a shit of a disease, but is it really the case that no-one in RTÉ checks these trailers before they go out?  Isn’t there someone like a proof-listener?  Someone who can protect the well-meaning integrity of serious programmes from pedantic pricks like me?  And if there isn’t, shouldn’t RTÉ think about employing one?  Someone as cynical, sarcastic and downright misanthropic as, well, me….

Now there’s a job I could happily apply for.
